Engineering Fellow:  EO Detector


The EO Detector Fellow will lead detector teams and work closely with detector suppliers and Engineers, while supporting the development, implementation, verification, and maintenance of electro-optical detection components and applications.  In addition, working closely with detector suppliers and across Product Lines, they will help shape the detector development strategy, including road maps for Product Lines and new technologies such as materials and read-out integrated circuits. 
Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the selection of detection solutions for electro-optical products.
  • Lead detector teams and oversee supplier activities
  • Support the development, implementation, verification and maintenance of electro-optical detection components.
  • Support development and implementation of video processing methodologies and algorithms in conjunction with detection selections.
  • Support trade studies on various detection device parameters such as optical collection efficiency, detector sensitivity, spectral band selection, etc.
  • Support the development and implementation of supplier and electro-optical subsystem test and verification of detection related requirements.
  • Identify strategic electro-optical detection development opportunities
  • Propose and coordinate independent research and development (IRAD) projects for the advancement of detection devices across programs and product suppliers
  • Ensure balance of risk, performance, and cost
  • Be accountable to leadership for technical decisions
  • Participate in major technical review boards, e.g., Failure Review Board 
  • Communicate and collaborate with Program Management and Technical Leadership, Engineering Leadership, Manufacturing, Suppliers, and Customers.
  • Guide, apprentice, mentor, and train employees within the electro-optical detection area

Required Skills/Experience:

  • A minimum of 12 years of electro-optical detection device experience from ultra-violet (0.3 um) through Long-Wave Infrared (14 um).
  • Demonstrated application of knowledge in detector physics, material properties, and fabrication processes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of detector material defects and temporal noise processes including methods for mitigating impact on electro-optical seeker performance.
  • Familiarity with Read-Out Integrated Circuit (ROIC) operation and ability to trade / balance ROIC functionality, detector material selection, Sensor Chip Assembly (SCA) thermal control, and video processing algorithm capabilities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of aging and environment related electro-optical detection changes.
  • Demonstrated innovative leadership skills, such as patents, publications, etc
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication ability to leadership
  • Responsible for providing guidance, coaching / mentoring and training to other employees across the business within area of expertise.
  • Existing, or the ability to obtain, a DoD issued Secret Security Clearance.

Required Education (including Major):

  • BS in Physics, Material Sciences or other related engineering field

Desired Skills:

  • MS or PhD in Physics, Material Sciences or other related engineering field
  • Prior active participation in a mentorship or coaching program involving several junior or mid-level engineers
  • Proficiency in Microsoft and Matlab tools
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead teams
  • Demonstrated ability to influence others to achieve technical and programmatic goals
  • Demonstrated proactive problem-solving experience
  • Demonstrated ability to develop a business strategic vision and execute changes
  • Working knowledge of C or C++
  • Experience within the aerospace industry
