Title: Telescope Senior Systems Engineer

The Sr. Systems Engineer will lead the full range of systems engineering efforts for the project. Specific responsibilities will include the management of flow-down of requirements from science, operations, and system-level requirements to telescope system and subsystem requirements, definition of telescope functional and performance requirements and associated verification methods, performance allocations and error budgets for lower-level subsystems, and management of the telescope requirements and interface control documents (ICDs), through the design, fabrication, integration, verification, and operational phases.

Additional responsibilities will include identification and management of applicable industry standards and other design specifications, including development of requirements for operations, reliability, availability, maintainability, safety (RAMS), testing, and metrology. The Telescope Senior Systems Engineer will lead the group risk, safety, and quality assurance efforts, in coordination with the systems engineering and quality assurance leads. The Telescope Senior Systems Engineer will develop assembly, integration, test (AIT), and commissioning plans and processes at the telescope level, and will assist in the development of AIT and commissioning plans for the telescope subsystems (e.g. optics, structures, controls). The telescope SE will lead the telescope group SE documentation efforts, configuration control process.

The Telescope Senior Systems Engineer will coordinate and collaborate with the telescope group controls, mechanical, optical, and software engineers, and will coordinate telescope group SE efforts with the systems engineering and software/controls groups.

Duties will be performed at a high level with only general supervision and direction.

Job Duties:

The Telescope Senior Systems Engineer will be responsible for:

• Managing the full range of systems engineering processes for the telescope group

• Deriving and managing telescope system and subsystem requirements, internal and external interfaces and ICDs, analyzing telescope system and subsystem performance, generating and maintaining error analyses and error budgets

• Preparing and maintaining telescope group AIT, commissioning, RAMS, and quality assurance plans

• Supervising the CAD/PDM systems lead and coordinating telescope CAD/PDM processes with the SE group.

• Managing all SE documentation and configuration control for the telescope

• Preparing technical reports to document the design and performance of the telescope systems

• Preparing and delivering programmatic and technical presentations at reviews and conferences

The Telescope Senior Systems Engineer will work closely with the telescope group and subsystem leads to:

• Develop and maintain telescope systems engineering cost estimates, budgets, and schedules

• Lead the development of top-down and bottom-up system performance estimates, allocations, and error budgets

• Coordinate telescope and subsystem assembly, integration, and test (AIT) and commissioning plans.

Minimum Requirements:

• A BS degree in astronomy, physics, engineering, or an equivalent technical discipline, with an MS in systems engineering strongly preferred.

• 10 years of relevant experience with systems engineering for electro-opto-mechanical systems, with at least 5 years of experience with space or ground-based optical/infrared telescopes strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• High-level, hands-on, expertise with systems engineering tools and processes appropriate to the development of large (6-10m) optical/IR telescopes and/or astronomical science instruments

• Knowledge and experience executing systems engineering efforts according to international standards (e.g. INCOSE, ISO/IEC 15288:2008)
